Castril

Castril de la Pena, Andalucia (Andalusia)

Castril is a small white village located at the base of the mountains of the Sierra de Castril Natural Park

Welcome to CastrilDuring 2006, Castril de la Peña was voted the most popular white village in Andalucia (on a Spanish TV programme) and as a result the area is now beginning to become more popular with tourists (mostly Spanish and French) who come to see its lake, river and abundance of water through springs in the mountains.

Castril is located in the Altiplano de Granada and becomes very lively during July and August but the remainder of the year the village remains quiet and is enjoyed mainly by locals.

Every Friday Castril holds a small market, where you can buy your fruit and veg, clothes, ecological products, natural rugs and pottery.

There are 3 small supermarkets, 2 banks, a post office, medical centre, pharmacy and town hall. Two schools cover ages 3 - 12 years old inclusive.  After this, children travel to Huescar to complete their secondary education.

Most shops open around 9.30am from Monday - Saturday and close around 2pm.  They then reopen from approximately 6.00pm though to 8 or 9pm (times may vary) dependent upon time of year.  It can be hard to get used to this, so if you do need to go shopping be aware you need to get up early.

Many years ago there was a glass factory in the local area.  Unfortunately, this was closed down. Many of the pieces of glass can be seen on the cobbled streets heading up to the church and now there is a new glass factory in operation to bring back some of this typical glass to the area.  During 2009, a glass shop has opened in the local village (head up towards the church, it can be found on the left hand side).  Students have been training to make glass here in the local village and you will be able to visit the shop and pick up a gift to take home with you from 5 euros.

Castril Gorge Walk - Sendero de la Pasarela colgante

One of the main features of Castril has to be the "Sendero de la Pasarela colgante", a popular walk which follows the River Castril and is known to the English speaking community as the "Gorge Walk.  The river begins at the bottom of Castril and you can take one of two routes.

At the bottom of Castril you walk through a row of trees, you then decline slowly and start to walk along a boarded  trail that is suspended above the river in the gorge.  You then go over a suspended bridge, become going through a small cave which becomes dark for a few minutes before daylight emerges again.

You then have the option to carry on and walk into the Castril valley.  How long you walk for is up to you.

Alternatively, once through the cave, you can bear down to the left on over a bridge (you will see renovated accommodation here).  This used to be an old mill.  Here you will then begin a gentle climb back into Castril.  Once back in Castril, you can enjoy a well deserved drink in one of the local bars!

Are you considering moving to Castril / thinking of buying a property to rent out?

We have a selection of properties for sale, available direct from the local owners we know here in the village.  Alternatively, we can put you in touch with Estate Agents who have property for sale that cover Baza, Benamaurel, Campo Camara, Campo Cebas, Caniles, Carramaiza, Castril, Castillejar, Cortes de Baza, Cuevas del Campo, Cullar, Fátima, Fuente Nuevas, Fuente Nieves, Fuente Vera, Galera, Guadix, Huescar, Las Almontaras, Los Brancos, Los Isodoros, Los Pedros, Los Torres, Manuel Díaz, Pozo Alcon, San Clemente and beyond....

If you are thinking of buying a ruin that needs renovation work or fancy a cave house built to your specification, we can recommend English and Spanish builders to give you guidance and a quotation if required.  We are also able to act on your behalf, if you are having works done here but cannot be here in person to attend to day to day issues.

There are a fair few families living in and around the Castril area with many more retired couples living on the outskirts of the village.

The schools here are very good and the teachers most helpful.  Not many of the teachers speak English and therefore you will need to try to learn the language.

The English children here range from 4 - 13 years old and have all settled here very quickly.
